What is llms.txt and do you need one?
llms.txt is a markdown file at /llms.txt that summarises your site for AI assistants and links to the pages worth reading. It's a proposed format, not an official standard, but it's cheap to add and gives AI a clean, accurate description of your business.
What goes in it
An H1 with your name, a one-line summary in a blockquote, a few short paragraphs, then H2 sections with link lists like "- [Pricing](/pricing): Plans and prices".
Some sites also publish llms-full.txt with the full text of key pages.
Is it a ranking factor?
No AI company has published it as a ranking factor, and support varies. Treat it as a helpful summary, alongside robots.txt, structured data and clear page copy — not a replacement for them.
Should you add one?
Yes, if your site is public. It takes minutes, can't hurt, and keeps the description AI reads under your control. Keep it accurate and update it when your offer changes.
